Here's the dealeyo.
IPB Is free to evaluate, there is no set time period to evaluate it, just as long as you have yet to decide if it is the right bulletin board for you. It is for this reason that I quit using it because i have already decided that my evaluation period is over with, and if i were to continue using it, it would be in violation of their terms of service.
IPB Is slowly turning into a commercial product, i am willing to bet that by the time they release release 5.0 rc1 that it will be completely commercial, with only a demo of the admin cp being on their website. it is their choice to make their software commercial, if you don't like it there are pleanty of other forum packages listed at http://foruminsider.com .
In my opinion, vBulletin is better than IPB in line of features, customer support, functionality, and security, and price. IPB does however take the cake in line of design. But, vBulletin can be skinned, and it does have a more advanced skinning engine.
I am planning on converting my forum: aforum.us to vBulletin from phpBB for the following reasons: 1) vBulletin has 43242314 more features 2) vBulletin is easier to skin 3) vBulletin offers better customer support .
The one thing i don't like about vBulletin is that it contains callback code to prevent piracy. Luckily i have grep installed on my computer, and had the opportunity to modify all code that calls back to version.vbulletin.com with the license number that was used by the original license holder when s/he downloaded it.
But, there's pleanty of software out there, http://foruminsider.com is an excellent resource for BBS creators, and users. I recommend everyone head over there and research in order to find the software that best fits them.

Vbulletin Rox ! Invision Board Sox ! .. Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead but i had to say that ... I totally dislike invision board. I use it for my forum. I will be dumping it for a real board soon, I won't get into why VB is better than IPB. It has been done before, and it would be more interesting watch a horse swat flies with his tail than get into that discussion again ..
But if anyone would like to know I will make a list of things ..

"is it real or an illusion ??? Confusion and mockery are two of the things you have to wonder. Is there such a thing as reality, or is reality just as fake as the fake ?? - Think twice about what you see for it may not be what you think" ;)

About the only time one thinks anothers opinion is not correct is when it is not the same opinion of said person

i prefer IPB. i have used it on many sites and find its a lot faster and easier to use overall. also most mods for vb are made from IPB mods. the major downside to IPB is the price if you actually pay for it.
